What is a Clarity Enhanced Diamond?
You may have heard about clarity enhanced diamonds and have many questions. Clarity is just one of the attributes evaluated in diamond grading, and when a diamond has significant flaws, especially those that can be seen by the naked eye, it can markedly lower the diamond’s value, not to mention its visual appeal.
There are two clarity enhancing techniques. One involves laser drilling, which drills holes into the diamond at the site of the flaw and burns it away. The other method is fracture filling, which involves injecting a special compound into any fractures to improve the diamond’s clarity. These techniques can make flaws invisible to the naked eye. The result is an enhanced, beautiful diamond. Many people turn to clarity enhanced diamonds as a great way to buy a bigger stone for a better price.
The European Gemological Laboratory (EGL) will only issue diamond reports for clarity enhanced diamonds that have been laser drilled or high pressure/high temperature (HPHT) processed, and will always disclose that the diamond has undergone such treatment.
It is important to know whether your diamond is clarity enhanced, not only so that you pay the right price, but also because exposure to certain cleaning and repair methods can ruin a fracture-filled diamond. At London Gold, we carry a large selection of beautiful EGL-certified clarity enhanced diamonds, and we’d love to show them to you!
